Hi all,
I wasn’t planning on writing again so soon, but I thought I would share a X (Twitter) post of mine from this morning that went viral. I had been thinking about Claudine Gay over the weekend and how I crossed paths with so many people like her when applying to colleges and seeking employment. Early this morning before I had coffee, certain thoughts started coming and I quickly composed them into a thread that I posted on X:
It quickly went viral — it was timing more than anything. Batya Ungar-Sargon of Newsweek Magazine, who we interviewed for the White Guilt documentary, reached out and asked me to convert the post into an op-ed that quickly made homepage and here it is:
The op-ed contains more personal details than the X thread so you may wish to click on the above photo and read that instead.
Lastly, a big and warm welcome to all of our new subscribers today. Honored to have you and always feel free to drop me a note.
Have a great week,
Eli
In today’s racialist culture, your heartfelt essay sounds almost radical and transgressive. But the fact that it went viral is proof that your ideas are what Americans long for: not continuous division on the basis of immutable traits, but unity on the basis of our shared humanity and country.
Beautiful work, Eli.
You hit this one out of the park, Eli. Keep it up. When even Newsweek can’t ignore the truths you speak you know you are making a difference.
