Dear all,
I hope you have been well. We know most of you from our “What Killed Michael Brown?” emails and we decided recently to move over to Substack where it will be easier for us provide updates on our happenings, especially on our new “White Guilt” documentary.
As many of you know, my father, Shelby Steele, has been fighting the culture wars for a long time as both a public intellectual and a filmmaker. In some ways, I was born into this fight because of my family’s place in America and my main contribution is as a filmmaker. We both see this newsletter as an informal chronicle of our efforts to better America and we will share everything from thoughts on culture/politics/films to ongoing insider updates on our documentary shoots. We may even do occasional podcasts — we know very well that there are way too many podcasts and we promise to carve our own unique niche. I hope to do at least two posts a week.
Having said that, I’m proud to announce that we have begun principle photography on our “White Guilt” documentary that will be the filmic sequel to my father’s book of the same name. When my father wrote the book in 2006 he did not expect white guilt to grow into the powerful force that unleashed massive societal changes after the death of George Floyd, from education to the federal government. This new documentary will be a deeply personal look into race in America and it will ask the question: can America ever move beyond its never-ending struggles with race?
We started filming in Chicago and in the Bay Area. Some of you may have heard the unfortunate news of how our SUV was broken into in San Francisco and 75% of our camera equipment was stolen. The story went viral and even Elon Musk responded with his own account of San Francisco violence:

A good friend of ours launched a fundraiser and the response was overwhelming with over $20K raised.
On July 6th, we will begin our major East Coast swing that will take us from Southampton, VA where we will visit the site of Nat Turner’s rebellion to DC, Philly, NY, Providence and, lastly Northampton where Jodi Shaw of Smith College fame lives. We are very excited about the interviews which will include Glenn Loury, Jason Riley, Batya Ungar-Sargon, and many others. We will be tired, but it will worth it.
In my last email to you all this past December, some of you expressed a desire to donate to our film. That means much to us because it has truly been difficult to raise funds for this film. The Shelby Steele Foundation is our fiscal sponsor and all donations made to the foundation to fund the “White Guilt” documentary will be tax-deductible. Please click here to go to the foundation’s website where you will see the “donate” button.
We are very much looking forward to creating a community of sorts here and please feel free to email me with any thoughts or questions. You guys were our biggest supporters during the “What Killed Michael Brown?” film and we hope to do an even better film this time around.
All my best,
Eli Steele
I just cannot do another paid subscription right now. But I wish you the very best—keep up the good work.
Just joined the paid subscription. So glad to support your work in a small way. Looking forward to your posts from the road and have added White Guilt to my summer reading list.
