Hi all,
Iβm still recovering from the 49ersβ pathetic loss to the Chiefs. Too many missed opportunities and mistakes. Anyway, Iβm writing today because a good friend of mine, Wilk Wilkinson, just released a podcast that he did with me about three weeks ago.
Sometimes the best things about these conversations is that there is often no prep work done beforehand and this allows for spontaneous conversations. One interesting thing that we covered was the issue of how morality can be shaped by narratives, even false ones. Imagine if the Nazis won WWII.
This subject came up when we talked about why my father and I decided to make βWhat Killed Michael Brown?β I said one major reason why was because we were seeing America shift away from its Judeo-Christian morality toward a morality grounded in racial essentialism. Black Lives Matter had been beyond successful in exploiting the death of Michael Brown to raise the racial consciousness of America, and they did so to the point where race played a role in determining morality.
White privilege is just one example of this. To be a moral person one must admit their white privileges. To be even moral, one must become an ally to the βoppressed.β The same goes with systemic racism, white fragility, and on β theyβre all moral litmus tests.
And that is why my father and I made βWhat Killed Michael Brown?β β to define what really happened there and to push back on this false narrative and its morality grounded in racial essentialism. After all, if we lose the traditional morality that attracts people from all of the world to here, then what?
I donβt want to give away too much at this point. But here is a sneak video preview that is about ten minutes long:
For the entire podcast which is about one hour long, please click here.
Would love to know your thoughts.
Lastly, I have been working on a short documentary, Killing America, that will be folded into the White Guilt documentary. In September, several Bay Area parents reached out in panic about how their school district was eliminating honors classes and bringing in Ethnic Studies. At first, I was a bit jaded β welcome to the club!
Then October 7th happened. Antisemitism began erupting in their high schools. I realized that all of this β antisemitism, removal of honors, installing ethnic studies β were deeply connected and this led me to take on one of the hardest docs Iβve done.
The reason for the difficulty was that there was no real action β it was all in the details. Being a literature major in college, I drew inspiration from the little known genre called novel of manners. Writers like Henry James focused on the details like how a guest unfolded her napkin at the table, a detail that may seem insignificant but actually revealed an entire world. So in a sense βKilling Americaβ is a βdocumentary of mannersβ and the challenge was to show how the details and non-actions, often invisible to the eye, were allowing the Left to transform Americaβs educational institutions to the point where antisemitism, anti-Asian hate, anti-white hate, and other forms of hate were allowed to flourish.
The reason why I mention this film is that we will be holding a sneak preview in Menlo Park on March 2nd. Iβm not sure who is local but for those who are, I will post the ticket information here once that is available and it is expected to sell out 200 seats quickly. We do plan to show the film other places as well.
Will be in touch and all my best,
Eli
I look forward to your filmβs release. It will be interesting to see itβs reception in Menlo Park!
God bless your endeavors in this vital work!
