Your father was a man of wise thought, ahead of his time expressing his wisdom to a skeptical generation. Thanks for the reminder, as well as for following his lead!
It is so fascinating to go back and read this except and see how well it aged. I do love that book.
America next elected Barack Obama in an expression of regret, healing, and hope of progress. Instead they got blame in perpetuity, a worsening perception of race relations, and a realization that there can be no path to redemption because there’s no power in forgiveness.
Hysteria around Trump culminated in the summer of 2020 and further weaponization of race. maybe now we are moving forward, even if it’s two steps back to take one step forward? Time will tell.
“And whenever people feel shamed, there is a blowback.” While there are many important things said in both your commentary and your father‘s article I don’t think there’s anything more important than this statement. My hope is that we learn from this. Telling the people we blame for the last 60 years how wrong they are and shaming them is going to get us nowhere. I think we can let the election results, particularly in the popular vote be the final word on that. My hope is that instead of spending time shaming them for what they have done we will put our energy into showing them the benefits of what we plan to do now.
We are at an historical crossroads with a great opportunity that hasn't existed in my lifetime. I hope that it is used wisely so that my grandkids will experience the greatness of this grand experiment.
Great comparison with Bush. People have largely forgotten the level of demonization and panic he was subjected to in the final years of his presidency.
Like your father, Mr. Shelby Steele, you are a thoughtful and brilliant observer of the human condition. His book, The Content of Our Character, is as relevant today on this subject as it was when he wrote it. You and he are my heroes. Your work is important and much needed. Please keep it up. Thank you.

I loved your father’s book and now your essays. Well done!!
You’re the best. Great commentary. I hope they don’t screw it up!

As usual, wonderful piece of writing from both you and your father.
True “AMERICANNESS” emerged on Nov. 5…
The people (all people) have spoken and democracy reigns!!! “Success is the best revenge and unifier.” Onward and upward!!!

Great comment. I really hope he seizes his opportunity and mandate to be forward looking.
