Hi all, It has been three years to date since “What Killed Michael Brown?” was first canceled and then subsequently released. I had planned to write on what it felt like to have the film canceled by Amazon when I was accused of hypocrisy for supporting the “cancelling” of the 34 Harvard organizations and its students that pledged solidarity with Hamas. We live a time where everything changes with lightning speed, especially our culture wars, and I had to stop for a moment and wonder if I was indeed being hypocritical.
Thank you for your very cogent thoughts on all of this. The support for Hamas is beyond sickening. No matter how oppressed, the horrific brutality displayed by this terrorist group is unthinkable and unsupportable.
You’re missing the easier argument. Cancellation is the literal cancelling of the ability of the speaker to speak. Ackman and others efforts are the opposite. They actually promote both the speaker and their statement and allows the marketplace of ideas to judge as it will. This is the essence of free speech, the opposite of cancel.
